There are some nouns which have an extra syllable in the plural form and we call them «ανισοσύλλαβα ουσιαστικά» (anisosílava usiastiká). Which are these? You will be surprised to know that these are some of the most common nouns!
Ενικός αριθμός (enikós arithmós) – Singular form
Nominative | ο μπαμπάς (o babás) = dad | η μαμά (i mamá) = mom | ο παππούς (o papús) = grandfather | η αλεπού (i alepú) = fox | ο ταξιτζής (o taxitzís) = taxi driver | ο καφές (o kafés) = coffee |
Πληθυντικός αριθμός (plithidikós arithmós) – Plural form
Nominative | οι μπαμπάδες (i babáthes) | οι μαμάδες (i mamáthes) | οι παππούδες (i papúthes) | οι αλεπούδες (i alepúthes) | οι ταξιτζήδες (i taxitzíthes) | οι καφέδες (i kaféthes) |
In other words, to form the plural of the above nouns, we have added the suffix –δες. Other nouns that are conjugated the same way are:
- ο περιπτεράς (o peripterás) = owner of a kiosk
- η γιαγιά (ghiaghiá) = grandma
- η μαϊμού (maimú) = monkey
- ο φούρναρης (fúrnaris) = owner of a bakery
- ο καναπές (kanapés) = sofa
