Everyone agrees that there is nothing like health. In 1987, the World Health Organization designated May 31st as World No Smoking Day. It is a good occasion to point out the consequences of this harmful habit but also the benefits of quitting smoking.
So let’s review the related vocabulary.
- καπνίζω (kapnízo) = to smoke
- ο καπνιστής / η καπνίστρια (o kapnistís / i kapnístria) = smoker (man/woman)
- η συνήθεια (i siníthia) = habit
- ο εθισμός (o ethismós) = addiction
- είμαι εθισμένος/-η (íme ethisménos) = I’m addicted
- το τσιγάρο (to tsigháro) = cigarette
- ο ηλεκτρονικό τσιγάρο (to ilektronikó tsigháro) = electronic cigarette
- ένα πακέτο τσιγάρα (éna pakéto tsighára) = a pack of cigarettes
- σταματάω/κόβω το κάπνισμα (stamatáo/kóvo to kápnisma) = to quit smoking
- «Το κάπνισμα βλάπτει σοβαρά την υγεία» (to kápnisma vlápti sovará tin ighía) = Smoking seriously damages health
- «Απαγορεύεται το κάπνισμα» (apaghorévete to kápnisma) = Smoking is prohibited
Bonus: «κάνω ό,τι μου καπνίζει» (káno óti mu kapnízi) is a metaphorical phrase which we use when we act recklessly and we do whatever we want, for example «Έχω πολλά λεφτά και θα κάνω ό,τι μου καπνίσει!» (ého polá leftá kie tha káno óti mu kapnísi) that is “I have a lot of money and I will do whatever I want!”.
